Valle Escondido, Spanish for Hidden Valley, is the perfect place for golf. The sky meets the earth for a surreal experience in the beautiful high country of Northern New Mexico. Valle Escondido Golf Course is environmentally aware, one of the few in the United States, using no pesticides and leaving it up to mother nature to water the fairways. Nevertheless, the ability for the course to play well is our number one concern, focusing in a traditional manner to greens and tee boxes. This type of maintenance gives respect not only to the environment but to the history of the sport.

Taos Art Museum
1366484403
Taos Art Museum opened in 1994. Eight years later it moved to the beautiful and historic Nicolai Fechin home. The Museum is dedicated to the art of early twentieth century Taos. The museum is housed in the studio and home that artist Nicolai Fechin built for his family between 1927 and 1933. Fechin, born in Kazan, Russia in 1881, carved and molded the adobe buildings into a fascinating, harmonic marriage of Russian, Native American, and Spanish motifs. Fechin's heirs have entrusted many of his art works to the care of Taos Art Museum. The heart of the museum is a collection of paintings by the masters of the Taos Society of Artists. This group was prolific from the arrival in Taos of Blumenschein and Phillips in 1898 through the 1930s. As a result of the acclaim these artists and their associates achieved, many more artists migrated to Taos, continuing a tradition of creativity into the twenty-first century.

Hacienda de los Martinez Museums
13_w275_h250
The Hacienda de los Martinez is one of the few northern New Mexico style, late Spanish Colonial period, "Great Houses" remaining in the American Southwest. Built in 1804 by Severino Martin (later changed to Martinez), this fortress-like building with massive adobe walls became an important trade center for the northern boundary of the Spanish Empire. The Hacienda was the final terminus for the Camino Real which connected northern New Mexico to Mexico City. The Hacienda also was the headquarters for an extensive ranching and farming operation.

Blumenschein Museum & Home
blumy_studio
Welcome to the home of E.L. Mary Greene, and Helen Blumenschein! Located on historic Ledoux Street in downtown Taos, the E.L. Blumenschein Home and Museum is maintained much as it was when the artist and his family were alive. The home is filled with a superb collection of the Blumenschein family's art, a representative sampling of works by other famous Taos artists, fine European and Spanish Colonial style antiques, and the family's lifetime of personal possessions. The home beautifully illustrates the lifestyle of Taos artists in the first half of the twentieth century.

Governor Bent House
Gov_Bent
Governor Bent House and Museum and Gallery of Western Art Home of New Mexico's first American governor, early trader, trapper and mountain man. Charles Bent was a highly respected, much loved figure of the Old West. He was a trader and owner of a number of wagon trains on the Santa Fe Trail. He owned trading posts in Santa Fe and Taos and had many dealings with early mountain men. He provided them with supplies and bought their furs and buffaloi hides. He, his brother William, and Ceran St. Vrain built Bent's Fort in Colorado, famous throughout the West as a trading center for the Indians and early mountain men.

Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument
bnr_Big-Horn-sheep1
The Río Grande del Norte National Monument was established on March 25, 2013 by Presidential Proclamation. The monument includes approximately 242,500 acres of public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The landscape is comprised of rugged, wide open plains at an average elevation of 7,000 feet, dotted by volcanic cones, and cut by steep canyons with rivers tucked away in their depths. The Río Grande carves an 800 foot deep gorge through layers of volcanic basalt flows and ash. Among the volcanic cones in the Monument, Ute Mountain is the highest, reaching to 10,093 feet.

Ojo Caliente Hot Springs
Our legendary waters have been soothing body, mind and spirit naturally for centuries. In the 1500's the Spaniard, in their quest for gold and the Fountain of Youth, discovered the unusual mineral springs in Ojo Caliente, New Mexico. One explorer's record cites, "The greatest treasure that I found these people to possess are hot springs which burst out at the foot of a mountain...so powerful are the chemicals contained in this water that the inhabitants believe that they were given to them by their gods. These Springs I have named Ojo Caliente, or hot eye." Click on the items to the left to discover more about Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs.

The Greater World Earthship Community
gworld2
he Greater World project is designed to create an ideal condition from which a sustainable community can grow and flourish. Approximately 200 people will live in independent homes built using mostly recycled materials. These solar homes will be capable of growing food year round and will require little or no supplementary utilities. This sets the stage for a non-destructive existence that removes stress from the lives of people and the planet. Forced to become a legal subdivision in 1998, the Greater World Community is now phasing its development, so that building can continue in certain sections, while fulfilling the county’s requirements in others. Sustainable Living Greater World is committed to exploring and demonstrating ways to design our homes and modify our lifestyles in order to live without polluting and without depleting our resources; to use no more of our natural resources than is sustainable. Our proposed lifestyle will be based on how much is available, not how much we customarily consume. This project reflects the experience gained from over 30 years of designing, testing and improving independent homes. These homes are built using recycled materials from Taos County; they make their own electricity from solar panels; catch their own water from rain and snow melt; contain and reuse their own waste water; and provide their own heating and cooling without the use of fossil fuels via passive solar and thermal mass architecture. We continue to evolve basic mechanical components and to simplify structural details toward this goal.

Taos Plaza
Taos-Plaza
Historic Taos Plaza Taos Plaza is the Heart of Taos. Don Fernando de Taos Plaza was settled by the Spanish colonists more than 300 years ago and still retains its original shape. The plaza was built for defense; windows and doors faced into the plaza and the limited entrances could be barricaded. The D.H. Lawrence paintings in Hotel La Fonda were "banned in London" because of their erotic nature. On display at the Old County Courthouse are the Depression-era murals by early Taos artists. During the Civil War, patriots guarded an American flag on the plaza. Because of their efforts, Taos Plaza was given the honor of flying the flag day and night. The large cross on the plaza was designed by local artist Ted Egri and placed on the plaza in honor of the many people of Taos who died in the Bataan Death March during World War II.
